In a move aimed at enhancing safety and traffic flow, the Scottish Ministers have issued a new regulation for a stretch of the A87 Trunk Road near the iconic Eilean Donan Castle. This regulation, known as the A87 Trunk Road (Eilean Donan) (Clearway) Order 2025, will take effect on June 30, 2025.

Key Highlights of the Order:

  1. Clearway Status: The designated 3.22-kilometre section of the A87, stretching from south-east to north-west of the Eilean Donan Castle Car Park access junction, will be a clearway. This means vehicles are prohibited from stopping on the main carriageway and verges without explicit permission from a police officer.

  2. Purpose: The primary goals of this order are to reduce potential danger to road users and to facilitate smoother traffic flow. By prohibiting stopping, the order aims to prevent accidents and traffic congestion.

  3. Exceptions:

    • Vehicles may stop if mandated by law, to avoid an accident, or due to uncontrollable circumstances.
    • Emergency services (fire brigade, ambulance, police, coastguard) are exempt.
    • Postal services and local council refuse collection vehicles are allowed to stop for their duties.
    • Public transport and taxis can stop for passenger-related activities.
    • Necessary stops related to construction, road maintenance, or removal of obstructions are permitted.

Why This Matters:

The stretch of the A87 around Eilean Donan is a critical route, not just for locals but also for tourists visiting the castle, one of Scotland's most famous landmarks. By implementing the clearway, the Scottish government aims to enhance road safety and ensure that traffic can move more efficiently, benefiting both residents and visitors.

This regulation is part of a broader effort to maintain and improve Scotland's road infrastructure, ensuring that it meets modern safety standards and supports economic activity in the region.

As the clearway order comes into effect, drivers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and be mindful of the new stopping restrictions to avoid penalties.
