New Speed Limits Set for M9/A9 Trunk Road in Thurso and Scrabster
Starting May 2, 2025, drivers using the M9/A9 Trunk Road around Thurso and Scrabster will need to adjust their speeds as per new regulations established by the Scottish Ministers. Here's a breakdown of the changes:
What's Changing?
-
20mph Zones:
- Specific areas in Scrabster and Thurso will have speed limits reduced to 20mph to enhance safety. This includes a stretch near the oil terminal at Scrabster and another between Janet Street and Durness Street in Thurso.
-
30mph Zones:
- Portions of the road extending from Durness Street to Castlegreen Road and from Janet Street to Millbank Road in Thurso will now have a 30mph speed limit.
-
40mph Zones:
- The longest stretches, covering areas from the oil terminal to Castlegreen Road and from Millbank Road to Mount Vernon Cemetery, will be regulated to 40mph.
Previous Orders Revoked
The introduction of these speed limits means several previous orders are now revoked, including those dating back to 1975, 1982, 1992, and 1994, which covered various restricted roads and speed limits in the region.
Exemptions
Certain vehicles are exempt from these restrictions, such as those used by Special Forces and coastguard services during emergencies.
These changes aim to improve road safety and traffic flow in and around Thurso and Scrabster. Drivers are urged to take note of the new limits to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads for everyone.
