From May 1, 2025, drivers travelling through Broadford on the A87 Trunk Road will need to slow down, thanks to a new order issued by the Scottish Ministers. Aimed at enhancing road safety, particularly in populated areas, the order introduces new speed limits of 20 mph and 30 mph on specific sections of the road.

Where Will the New Speed Limits Apply?

  • 20 mph Zone: A 710-metre stretch of the A87, starting 10 metres northwest of its junction with the B8083 Broadford to Elgol Road and extending southeast to 238 metres beyond Sraid Na H-Atha.

  • 30 mph Zones:

    • A 1.186-kilometre segment from 48 metres northwest of Waterloo Road to 238 metres southeast of Sraid Na H-Atha.
    • A 570-metre section from 10 metres northwest of the B8083 junction to 115 metres northwest of Pairc Na Craobh's centreline.

Exemptions to the Rule

Certain vehicles are exempt from these speed limits:

  • Special Forces vehicles operating under specific regulations.
  • Vehicles used for emergency coastguard purposes.

Out with the Old

This new order sees the revocation of the previous 30 mph speed limit order from the year 2000, reflecting updated considerations for traffic management and safety in the area.

Why the Change?

The Scottish Ministers, exercising their powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, have introduced these changes following public notices and compliance with regulatory procedures. The goal is to promote safer driving conditions in Broadford, a key concern for local residents and authorities alike.

So, if you're planning to drive through this scenic stretch of Scotland, remember to keep an eye on those speedometers from May 1st onwards!
