
Portrees A87 Trunk Road Gets a Speed Limit Makeover: What You Need to Know
Big changes are coming for drivers in Portree as new speed limits are set to take effect on the A87 Trunk Road. Starting May 1, 2025, motorists will need to adjust to revised speed restrictions designed to enhance safety and traffic flow. Here's a breakdown of what these changes mean for your daily commute.
New Speed Limits

20mph Zone:
- A short stretch of the A87 will see a reduced speed limit of 20mph. This section extends from approximately 198 metres south of its junction with the A855 to 36 metres northwest of Hedgefield Road. This change covers a total distance of about 552 metres.

30mph Zones:
- Two sections of the A87 will be designated as 30mph zones:
- The first begins 679 metres south of Heron Place and extends northwards to 198 metres south of the A855 junction, spanning roughly 1.201 kilometres.
- The second section starts 36 metres northwest of Hedgefield Road and stretches to 52 metres southeast of Lisigarry Place, covering about 521 metres.
- Two sections of the A87 will be designated as 30mph zones:
Exemptions
Not all vehicles are subject to these new speed limits. Exemptions apply to:
- Special Forces vehicles operating under specific regulations.
- Emergency vehicles used for coastguard purposes.
Previous Order Amendments
This new Order also modifies past regulations. It removes certain paragraphs and parts of the 2017 Order that previously dictated 40mph and part-time 20mph limits, simplifying the speed regulations for the area.
