28 April 2025 at 3:05 am (Europe/London)

Attention all drivers! Starting April 30, 2025, a temporary speed limit will be enforced on a stretch of the M74 Trunk Road. Here’s everything you need to know about the change and how it might affect your journey.

Where and When?

The speed restriction applies to both the northbound and southbound lanes of the M74 between Junction 9 (B7076 Strathaven Road bridge) and Junction 11 (B7078 underbridge at Poniel Interchange). This stretch spans approximately 10 kilometres.

The reduced speed limit of 30 miles per hour will be in effect from April 30, 2025, until July 31, 2025.

Why the Change?

The Scottish Ministers have enacted this temporary speed limit to ensure safety while essential roadworks are carried out. These works necessitate a slower traffic flow to protect both road workers and motorists.

Are There Alternatives?

Rest assured, alternative routes have been considered to accommodate the expected traffic changes. However, if you must travel through this section, please adhere to the new speed limit for everyone's safety.

Who’s Exempt?

Certain vehicles are exempt from this speed restriction, including:

  • Special Forces vehicles as specified in the Road Traffic Exemptions (Special Forces) Regulations.
  • Vehicles used in coastguard emergencies.

Stay Informed

Signs indicating the new speed limit will be clearly displayed along the affected stretch. Keep an eye on these signs and adjust your speed accordingly.
