Whats New on Belfasts Roads? Key Changes to Traffic Rules Starting August 2025
11 July 2025 at 3:03 am (Europe/London)
Starting August 1, 2025, Belfast's city centre will see significant changes in traffic regulations, thanks to a new order from the Department for Infrastructure. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know:
1. Cycle Lanes Expansion
- New cycle lanes and tracks have been introduced on Boyne Bridge Place, Durham Street, Glengall Street, Great Victoria Street, and Hope Street. These changes aim to create safer and more efficient routes for cyclists.
- An exception is made for accessing properties adjacent to the cycle lane on Glengall Street.
2. One-Way Streets and Turns
- The one-way system on Glengall Street has been extended. However, the one-way system on St Andrews Square West has been removed.
- Vehicles on Glengall Street and Hope Street must now make a left turn onto Great Victoria Street, helping streamline traffic flow.
3. Taxi Stands Adjustments
- Two new taxi stands have been established on Boyne Bridge Place, while stands on Glengall Street and Great Victoria Street have been revoked.
- Amelia Street’s taxi stand description has been updated for better clarity.
4. Clearways and Bus Lanes
- Urban clearways have been updated to include Boyne Bridge Place, with specific timings restricting parking during peak hours.
- Bus lane descriptions on Great Victoria Street have been altered to improve bus traffic efficiency.
5. Parking and Waiting Restrictions
- New 'no waiting' zones have been designated on various streets, including Durham Street, Boyne Bridge Place, Hope Street, and Bruce Street. Some areas allow loading and unloading; others do not.
- Parking spots on Hope Street and Lincoln Place are no longer part of the city’s controlled parking zone.
6. Offences and Penalties
- Violating these new traffic rules can lead to a £90 penalty charge. More severe breaches could result in fines up to £1,000.
These changes are designed to enhance safety and improve traffic flow in Belfast’s bustling city centre. Keep an eye out for new road signs and markings that will guide you through these updates. Whether you're cycling, driving, or taking a cab, make sure to adjust to these new rules to avoid penalties and contribute to a smoother traffic experience.
