Attention all drivers in South East Scotland! Major roadworks are set to commence across several key trunk roads, bringing with them temporary traffic prohibitions, overtaking bans, and speed restrictions. Here's what you need to know to plan your journeys effectively during this period.

What’s Happening?

The Scottish Ministers have issued a new order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This involves:

  • Complete Road Closures: Certain road sections will be closed to all traffic when indicated by specific traffic signs.
  • No Overtaking: On specified road lengths, overtaking will be prohibited.
  • Speed Limits: Reduced speed limits will be enforced across multiple trunk roads.

Key Road Closures and Restrictions

  • M8/A8/A8(M) Edinburgh – Greenock Trunk Road: Various sections around Junction 3 and Junction 3A in Livingston and Starlaw.
  • M9/A9 Edinburgh – Stirling – Thurso Trunk Road: Sections around Junction 1 (Newbridge) will be affected.
  • M90/A90/A9000 Edinburgh – Fraserburgh Trunk Road: Echline Junction will see changes.
  • M80 Glasgow – Stirling Trunk Road: Expect restrictions near Junctions 3, 5, 6, 6A, and 7.
  • A1 Edinburgh – Berwick Upon Tweed Trunk Road: Several slip roads will be affected, including Oaktree and Abbotsview Junctions.
  • A720 Edinburgh City Bypass: Dreghorn and Baberton Junctions will have limited access.

New Speed Limits

Drivers should be aware of the following temporary speed limits:

  • 40 mph on parts of the M8, M9, M90, and M80.
  • 50 mph on segments of the M8, A1, and A720.
  • 30 mph in specific areas on the A1, A702, A68, A6091/A7, and A985.

Exemptions

Emergency service vehicles and those involved in the roadwork activities will be exempt from these restrictions.

Plan Your Journey

Motorists should consider alternative routes where possible and allow extra time for travel. Keep an eye out for road signs indicating restrictions and follow all instructions for a safe journey.
