Upcoming Road Restrictions in South West Scotland: What You Need to Know

Starting July 1, 2025, drivers in South West Scotland will need to navigate a series of temporary road restrictions on trunk roads, set to last until October 1, 2025. These changes, announced by the Scottish Ministers, aim to accommodate essential roadworks and ensure safety for both workers and motorists.

Key Restrictions:

  1. Road Closures:

    • Certain stretches of the M8, A8, and M73 trunk roads will be temporarily closed to traffic. These closures will be clearly marked with barrier signs, directing traffic away from the affected areas.
  2. No Overtaking Zones:

    • Overtaking will be prohibited on specified road sections. These areas will be marked with "no overtaking" signs to ensure a smooth and safe flow of traffic.
  3. Speed Limit Changes:

    • Reduced speed limits will be enforced in designated sections to enhance safety during roadworks. In some areas, speeds will be capped at 40 mph, while other sections will have limits as low as 30 mph, particularly where convoy systems are in operation.

Affected Areas: The restrictions will impact numerous roads, including:

  • M8/A8/A8(M) routes between Edinburgh and Greenock.
  • Specific slip roads and roundabouts, such as Baillieston Interchange and Chapelhall.
  • A725/A726 and A7071 trunk roads, affecting sections around Shawhead, East Kilbride, and Bellshill.

Exemptions: Emergency service vehicles, including fire brigade, ambulance, police, and coastguard, will be exempt from these prohibitions and speed limits. Vehicles involved in the roadworks themselves will also have exemptions.

Alternative Routes: Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys ahead of time and consider alternative routes to avoid delays. The Scottish Ministers have assessed and ensured the availability of suitable detours to minimize disruption.

Stay informed and drive safely as these necessary improvements are underway. For updates, keep an eye on official transport channels and local news outlets.
