New Traffic Rules for North East Scotland: What You Need to Know

25 June 2025 at 2:55 pm (Europe/London)

In a recent move aimed at improving road safety and facilitating necessary construction works, the Scottish Government has announced a new set of temporary traffic regulations for key trunk roads in North East Scotland. The "North East Scotland Trunk Roads (Temporary Prohibitions of Traffic and Overtaking and Temporary Speed Restrictions) Order 2025" will be enforced from July 1st to October 1st, 2025. Here's a breakdown of what drivers need to know:

Key Changes

  1. Road Closures and Diversions:

    • Certain sections of significant trunk roads, including parts of the M9/A9 and M90/A90, will face temporary closures. These closures are marked by traffic signs indicating road blocks and diversions to guide traffic safely.
  2. No Overtaking Zones:

    • Specific stretches of road will implement a no-overtaking rule. This applies to motor vehicles, but not to cycles or motorcycles. Look for signs depicting the classic "no overtaking" symbol to stay compliant.
  3. Reduced Speed Limits:

    • Speed limits will be temporarily reduced on various road sections, primarily to 50 mph and in some areas to as low as 30 mph. These limits aim to ensure safety around active work zones and are clearly marked with speed limit signs.
    • Notably, when convoy operations are in place, speeds may be further restricted to 10 mph.
  4. Exemptions:

    • Emergency vehicles, such as those used by the fire brigade, ambulance, police, or coastguard, are exempt from these restrictions.
    • Vehicles used specifically for carrying out road works are also exempt.

Affected Areas

  • M9/A9 Edinburgh – Stirling – Thurso Trunk Road: Various slip roads and main carriageways will experience restrictions, particularly around Broxden Roundabout and Keir Roundabout.
  • M90/A90/A9000 Edinburgh – Fraserburgh Trunk Road: From Halbeath to Barnhill and beyond, expect changes to speed limits and overtaking rules.
  • A92/A972 Kirkcaldy – Dundee Trunk Road: Speed reductions will be enforced along significant stretches, impacting both northbound and southbound traffic.

Why These Changes?

The temporary measures are designed to facilitate the safe execution of road works, ensuring minimal disruption while maintaining safety for road users and workers. These adjustments have been planned with alternative routes in mind to ease the traffic flow.
