Get Ready for the Royal Spectacle: Aerial Restrictions Announced for King’s Birthday Flypast
On the occasion of His Majesty the King’s birthday, the skies will be filled with a spectacular formation flypast. To ensure this grand event goes off without a hitch, the UK government has put in place temporary airspace restrictions across several regions on June 14, 2025. Here’s what you need to know:
What’s Happening?
A large formation flypast is scheduled to celebrate the King’s birthday, and as a result, flying will be restricted in certain areas between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM (UTC), which translates to 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM BST. These restrictions are crucial to ensure the flypast proceeds smoothly and safely, without the risk of unintended disruptions.
Where Are the Restrictions?
The restricted airspace covers parts of East Anglia, the North Sea, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, London, and areas west and north of London, including Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire. Each area has specific altitude restrictions, ranging from 10,000 feet to 2,500 feet above sea level.
Who’s Exempt?
Not all aircraft are grounded. Exemptions apply to:
- Police Air Support Units
- Emergency Medical Services
- Maritime and Coastguard Agency
- Aircraft with specific clearances from air traffic control units or the Royal Air Force
- Flights operating in accordance with permissions granted by the Royal Air Force King’s Birthday Flypast Project Officer
Why the Restrictions?
The flypast is an intricate and time-sensitive event. With multiple aircraft flying in formation, it’s crucial to maintain a clear airspace to prevent any potential disruptions from transient aircraft.
Key Contacts
For those needing more information, the Civil Aviation Authority’s point of contact is Mr. David Ridley, Airspace Regulator. Additionally, for clearances and permissions, relevant authorities such as the 78 Squadron Royal Air Force, Swanwick, can be contacted.
Stay Informed
Detailed information will be shared through Aeronautical Information Circulars (AIC) and Notices to Aviation (NOTAM). Pilots and aviation enthusiasts are advised to stay up-to-date with these notices to ensure compliance and safety.
As the nation gears up to celebrate, these measures will ensure that the skies are safe and clear for a breathtaking display in honour of His Majesty the King. So, keep your eyes on the skies and enjoy the show!
