New Parking Changes for Disabled Drivers in Northern Ireland
18 September 2025 at 3:04 am (Europe/London)
The Department for Infrastructure has announced a new amendment, set to take effect on October 8, 2025, that will adjust parking allocations for disabled drivers across Northern Ireland. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for those with mobility challenges.
Key Changes:
-
Removal of Parking Spot:
- The disabled parking spot on Downpatrick Road, Strangford, will be removed. This change reflects an ongoing review to optimize parking availability for disabled individuals in areas of higher demand.
-
New Parking Spaces Introduced:
- Hillcrest, Aughnacloy: A new parking space will be available on the west side in front of No. 20, extending 2.5 metres in a westerly direction.
- Burleigh Walk, Carrickfergus: A parking area on the south-west side near No. 10 will offer a 5.5-metre space in a north-easterly direction.
- Orritor Street, Cookstown: A 6-metre space is introduced on the north side, designed to improve access for Cookstown residents.
- Bards Hill, Derry/Londonderry: A space at the rear of No. 30 allows for 3 metres in a south-easterly direction, enhancing accessibility in this area.
- St Columbs Wells, Derry/Londonderry: A 5.5-metre parking spot will be available in the car park behind No. 4, designed to serve the busy urban area.
- St. Dillons Avenue, Downpatrick: A new spot on the west side offers a 5.5-metre space designed to accommodate the needs of local disabled drivers.
-
Limited Waiting Parking:
- Two new limited waiting spaces have been designated on The Diamond, Derry/Londonderry, on both the north-east and north-west sides. These spots offer short-term parking options for disabled drivers, strategically placed near key junctions for ease of access.
This amendment follows a comprehensive consultation process with stakeholders and local residents, ensuring that the changes meet community needs without receiving any objections. The Department for Infrastructure is committed to continually assessing and optimizing parking facilities to support the mobility and independence of disabled persons across Northern Ireland.
