Get ready to dust off your helmets and pump up your tires! Significant changes are coming to Northern Ireland's cycle routes, making it easier and safer for cyclists to navigate through specific areas. Here's what you need to know about the latest amendments.

Key Changes Effective from October 8, 2025

The Department for Infrastructure has announced updates to the Cycle Routes Order (Northern Ireland) 2008, which will come into force on October 8, 2025. These updates include the addition of several new cycle paths and the removal of one existing route. Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Removed Route:

    • Craigmore Way, Newry: This route will no longer be part of the official cycle network.
  2. Newly Added Routes:

    • Newcastle Road, Castlewellan: A new two-way shared cycle track will stretch 1,940 meters from a point 63 meters south-east of Slieve Drinne Court to Sawmill Road.
    • Dundrum Road, Clough: Two segments are added:
      • From Blackstaff Road to the northern junction with Ardilea Road, spanning 1,120 meters.
      • A short 43-meter connection from the northern junction with Ardilea Road.
    • Carnbane Way, Newry: Extending 1,250 meters from Damolly Roundabout to 63 meters north of McCanns Corner Roundabout.
    • Craigmore Way, Newry: A new section covers 550 meters from McCanns Corner Roundabout, ending 250 meters south-west of Craigmore View.

Compliance and Penalties

Cyclists and motorists take note—compliance with these new routes is not optional. Here’s what happens if you don’t follow the rules:

  • Parking Violations: If a vehicle other than a cycle is found waiting in a cycle lane, the owner will face a penalty charge of £90.
  • General Violations: Breaking any other rules under the Cycle Routes Order could result in a fine of up to £1,000, as dictated by the Road Traffic Regulation Order.

What's Next?

Expect to see new traffic signs and road markings that clearly indicate these updated cycle routes. Stay alert and adhere to the new guidelines to ensure a smooth transition for all road users.

The introduction of these new routes is a positive step towards promoting sustainable transport and improving safety for cyclists. So, gear up and enjoy the expanded network while doing your part to reduce congestion and pollution. Happy cycling!
