In a significant move, the UK government has enacted the Diocese of Chichester (Educational Endowments) Order 2025, reshaping the future of educational endowments linked to the Mountfield and Whatlington Church of England Primary School in East Sussex.

Background: A Legacy Reimagined

The Mountfield and Whatlington Church of England Primary School, once a beacon of religious education, has seen its original premises repurposed. With the property no longer serving its initial educational purpose, the school’s endowment, established through historical deeds dating back to 1874, has been reviewed for contemporary relevance.

A New Trustee in Town

The order appoints the Chichester Diocesan Fund and Board of Finance as the official trustee. This body will now oversee the £212,333 derived from the sale of the school's former premises, along with any income generated from these assets.

Consolidation and Purpose

In a bid to enhance educational opportunities, these assets will be merged into the Diocese of Chichester Consolidated Educational Endowments. The consolidated fund, now known as the Chichester Diocesan Uniform Statutory Trusts Fund, aims to support a variety of educational institutions within the Church of England’s purview, including voluntary and academy schools.

Empowering Education

The funds will be directed towards several key initiatives:

  • Acquiring and improving school sites and facilities.
  • Supporting maintenance and operational needs of schools and teacher housing.
  • Providing resources and services to enhance educational management and inspection processes.

Final Thoughts

This strategic realignment not only honours the historical legacy of the Mountfield and Whatlington Church of England Primary School but also ensures that its endowment continues to serve the educational and spiritual needs of future generations. By consolidating resources and focusing on broader educational goals, the Diocese of Chichester is set to foster a stronger, more unified educational environment across its schools.
