A significant transformation is underway for the historic endowment of Takeley Church of England School in Essex. As of June 11, 2025, this endowment, rooted in a deed dating back to 1840, will enter a new era under the stewardship of the Chelmsford Diocesan Board of Finance.

Why the Change? The original premises of the school, which once served as a hub for religious education in line with Church of England principles, are no longer in use. Consequently, the endowment, which includes £138,575.40 from the sale of these premises, is being redirected to support a broader educational mission.

What Happens Now? The Chelmsford Diocesan Board of Finance, now the official trustee, will manage these funds. The assets will merge with the Diocese of Chelmsford Consolidated Educational Endowments Fund. This move aims to streamline resources and enhance the support for Church of England educational institutions within the diocese.

How Will the Funds Be Used? The consolidated fund will support various educational initiatives, including:

  • Purchasing sites and improving facilities for Church of England schools in the area.
  • Maintaining school premises and associated teacher housing.
  • Providing educational resources and management guidance.
  • Supporting inspections and staff employment related to these educational activities.

Who Benefits? The beneficiaries of this restructured endowment include voluntary schools, foundation schools, academies, city technology colleges, and arts colleges within the Diocese of Chelmsford, all committed to providing education aligned with the Church of England's values.

This strategic move ensures that the legacy of Takeley Church of England School continues to influence and enrich community education across the region, adapting to contemporary needs while honoring its historical roots.
