Big Changes for Drivers: 20mph Speed Limit Coming to Spean Bridge

28 July 2025 at 10:24 am (Europe/London)

If you regularly drive through Spean Bridge, get ready to ease off the accelerator! Starting August 1st, 2025, a new speed limit will be in place for a significant stretch of the A86 Trunk Road. The Scottish Ministers have officially declared that the speed limit will be reduced from 30mph to a calmer 20mph.

What You Need to Know:

  • New Speed Limit: The A86 section through Spean Bridge, stretching 586 metres from the junction with the A82 to a point just past Tirindrish Road, will soon be a 20mph zone. This change is aimed at enhancing safety for both drivers and pedestrians in the area.

  • Out with the Old: This new order revokes previous speed regulations, including the 2002 and 2006 orders that established a 30mph limit and a part-time 20mph limit near Spean Bridge Primary School.

  • Exceptions to the Rule: Not everyone has to slow down. Special forces vehicles, when operating under specific conditions, and vehicles used in coastguard emergencies are exempt from this new limit.

This decision follows thorough procedures, including public notices and consultations. It's part of a broader effort to manage traffic and improve safety in Scotland's communities.

So, whether you're a local or just passing through, mark your calendars for August 1st and prepare to enjoy a more leisurely drive through the charming Spean Bridge. Safe travels!
