Attention All Aviators: New Flying Restrictions Over Southport for Upcoming Airshow
If you're planning to take to the skies over Southport, Merseyside, at the end of August 2025, there's an important update you need to know. The UK Government has announced temporary airspace restrictions to ensure safety during the highly anticipated Southport Airshow.
Key Details:
- When: Flying restrictions will be in effect from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM UTC on both 30th and 31st August 2025.
- Where: The restricted zone covers a circular area with a 2.3 nautical mile radius, centred at coordinates 53°39'21"N 3°01'17"W.
- Altitude Limit: No aircraft will be allowed to fly below 5,000 feet above mean sea level within this zone.
Exceptions:
Certain aircraft are exempt from these restrictions, including those operated by:
- Police Air Support Units
- Emergency Medical Services
- The Maritime and Coastguard Agency
Additionally, any aircraft can operate in the restricted area if they have prior permission from the Southport Airshow flying display director.
Why the Restrictions?
The airshow will feature numerous aircraft performing high-energy manoeuvres, posing potential risks if the airspace isn't managed carefully. The Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport have both emphasized public safety as the primary reason for these temporary restrictions.
Important Notes:
- Time Zone: Remember, the times listed are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is one hour behind British Summer Time (BST).
- Contact for More Info: For any queries or further details, aviators can reach out to Mr. Alan Frew, Airspace Regulator at the Civil Aviation Authority, by calling 0330 138 2734.
Keep an eye out for updates through Aeronautical Information Circulars (AIC) and Notices to Aviation (NOTAM), which will provide comprehensive details about the restrictions.
Stay informed and safe flying during the Southport Airshow!
