In a bid to enhance road safety, the Scottish Government has announced new speed limits for sections of the A82 Trunk Road in Inverness. The changes, officially titled "The A82 Trunk Road (Inverness) (20mph and 30mph Speed Limits) Order 2025," are set to take effect on June 25, 2025. Here's a breakdown of what drivers can expect:

Key Changes:

  1. New Speed Zones:

    • 20 mph Zone: A stretch of the A82, beginning approximately 70 metres northeast of the Telford Street roundabout extending to around 65 metres southwest of its junction with Bught Drive, now has a speed limit of 20 mph. This covers a distance of about 2.075 kilometres.
    • 30 mph Zones:
      • From the point 65 metres southwest of the Bught Drive junction, extending southwest to 120 metres south of the General Booth Road kerbline, the speed limit will be 30 mph. This section is about 620 metres long.
      • Another section from 70 metres northeast of the Telford Street roundabout to 367 metres north of the Henderson Road junction will also have a 30 mph limit, spanning approximately 1.953 kilometres.
  2. Revocation of Previous Orders:

    • The 30 mph speed limit order from 2007 for the A82 in Inverness has been revoked, making way for these updated regulations.
  3. Exemptions:

    • Certain vehicles, such as those used by special forces under specific regulations, and emergency coastguard vehicles, are exempt from these speed restrictions.

Why These Changes?

The new speed limits aim to improve safety for all road users by reducing the risk of accidents in busy or residential areas. By slowing down traffic, the government hopes to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.

What Should Drivers Do?

Drivers using the A82 in Inverness should be aware of the new speed zones and adjust their driving accordingly from June 25, 2025, to comply with the updated limits. Signs will be in place to guide and inform road users of these changes.

Stay informed and drive safely to contribute to a safer road environment for everyone.
