Big News for Edinburgh's Skies! If you're planning to fly your drone around Edinburgh Castle this August, you might want to hold off. The UK Government has issued new regulations to ensure public safety during the much-anticipated 2025 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

What's Happening?
From July 31st to August 23rd, 2025, the skies above Edinburgh Castle will have restricted airspace to accommodate the thousands of people attending the Tattoo. This means unmanned aircraft, including drones, are prohibited from flying below 1,000 feet above sea level during specific times.

When and Where?

  • Dates:
    • July 31st to August 2nd
    • August 4th to August 9th
    • August 11th to August 16th
    • August 18th to August 23rd
  • Times: 3:00 PM to 10:59 PM UTC (Note: This is 4:00 PM to 11:59 PM in British Summer Time)
  • Location: A specific area outlined by coordinates around Edinburgh Castle.

Exceptions?
Only drones operated by or with special permission from Police Scotland can enter this restricted airspace. If you believe your drone needs to be in this area, you must seek authorization from the Police Scotland Aviation Safety and Security Unit.

Why the Restrictions?
The restrictions aim to ensure public safety during the event, which attracts large crowds. The Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport have agreed that these measures are necessary.

Need More Info?
For those who need further clarification or who wish to seek permission, contact Mr. Alan Frew, Airspace Regulator, at the Civil Aviation Authority via 03301 382734.

Whether you're a local or a visitor, make sure your plans align with these regulations to avoid any disruptions during this spectacular event. Stay safe and enjoy the Tattoo!
