Starting May 2, 2025, new flight restrictions are set to take effect over the SS Richard Montgomery wreck near Sheerness, Kent. The UK government has issued these regulations to ensure public safety around this sensitive site.

What's Happening?

The SS Richard Montgomery, a sunken vessel, has prompted the Secretary of State for Transport to restrict aircraft from flying below 13,100 feet within a one nautical mile radius of the wreck. This decision is driven by concerns about potential hazards linked to the wreck's location.

Key Details:

  • Restricted Zone: Aircraft are prohibited from flying below 13,100 feet above mean sea level in a specified area centered at coordinates 512758N 0004712E.

  • Exceptions: Certain aircraft are exempt from these restrictions, including those operated by:

    • Police Air Support Units
    • Emergency Medical Services
    • The Maritime and Coastguard Agency
    • Aircraft with special written permission from the Secretary of State

Why the Restriction?

The measure is a proactive step to safeguard the public and prevent any possible incidents arising from disturbances at the site. Both the Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport have agreed on the necessity of this restriction.

How Will This Be Communicated?

The Aeronautical Information Service will disseminate full details through its Briefing Sheet and a Notice to Aviation. For further information, Mr. Alan Frew, Airspace Regulator at the Civil Aviation Authority, is the designated contact person.

These regulations highlight the importance of ensuring safety in areas with potential risks and demonstrate the government’s commitment to public safety in air travel.
