Drone Ban Over Balmedie: What You Need to Know

16 July 2025 at 7:27 am (Europe/London)

From the 20th of July to the 10th of August 2025, a temporary no-fly zone for drones will be in effect over Balmedie, Aberdeen. This move comes as the UK government prepares for a significant influx of visitors attending two major golfing championships. The goal? To ensure public safety as large crowds gather for these prestigious events.

Key Details:

  • Time Frame: The restrictions start at 3:00 AM on July 20th and end at 9:00 PM on August 10th.
  • Area Affected: A circular zone with a 1-nautical-mile radius, centred at coordinates 57°16'38"N 002°01'16"W.
  • Altitude Restriction: No drones are allowed to fly below 1,000 feet above sea level within this area.

However, if you have a compelling reason to fly your drone during this period, all hope is not lost. You can seek special permission from the Fairhurst Event Safety Officer.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Department for Transport have endorsed this regulation to prioritize the safety of attendees. Drone operators should mark these dates and coordinates on their maps to avoid unintentional violations.

For those needing more information or wishing to apply for flying permission, Mr. Alan Frew, Airspace Regulator at the CAA, can be contacted at 03301 382734.
