Big Changes to GP Services in England: What You Need to Know

The government has introduced new rules that will change how GP services are delivered in England, aiming to improve patient access and streamline operations. Here's a breakdown of the key changes:

  1. Online Access to GP Practices: Starting 1 October 2025, GP practices must ensure their online consultation tools are available from 8 am to 6:30 pm. This means you can reach out to your GP using online tools throughout the day, making it easier to get in touch without visiting the practice in person. However, for urgent medical needs, you'll still be advised to call or visit directly.

  2. GP Connect: GPs will be required to keep their computer systems running to allow other healthcare providers to access patient records for direct care. This interconnectivity aims to streamline patient care by ensuring that all healthcare providers have up-to-date information.

  3. Patient Guidance Access: GP practices will need to include a link on their websites to the NHS England's "You and Your General Practice" guide. This guide helps patients understand what services they can expect from their GP, promoting transparency and accountability.

  4. Patient Safety: All GP practices must register for an account with the Learn from Patient Safety Events (LFPSE) service. This will help practices better manage and learn from safety events within their premises, enhancing overall patient safety.

  5. Out of Area Registration: GPs will need commissioner approval to register patients who live outside their practice area in specific circumstances. This measure is to ensure that the practice can provide adequate services to all its patients.

  6. Partnership Changes: If a GP partnership dissolves and there isn't a nominated successor, the local health commissioner can terminate the contract. This aims to prevent disputes and ensure continuity of care.

  7. Removing Violent Patients: Clearer rules will be established for removing patients from practice lists if they have been violent or threatening. This includes immediate removal if the incident was reported to the police, ensuring practices can maintain a safe environment for staff and other patients.

  8. Updating Patient Lists: The period for removing patients whose addresses are unknown will be shortened from six to three months. This change helps practices keep their patient lists accurate and up-to-date more efficiently.

These updates are part of a broader effort to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of GP services in England. While some changes focus on administrative efficiency, others aim to better integrate technological solutions into healthcare delivery, ensuring patients have consistent and reliable access to medical services.
