Exciting New Bridge for Pedestrians and Cyclists to Span River Avon in Worcestershire
In a major development for Worcestershire's transport infrastructure, a new pedestrian and cycle bridge is set to enhance connectivity across the River Avon. The Worcestershire County Council (Hampton Bridge) Scheme 2025 has officially been given the green light, following confirmation by the Secretary of State for Transport. Here's what you need to know:
The Bridge at a Glance:
- Location: The bridge will stretch across the River Avon, linking Pershore Road with land near the Evesham Leisure Centre. It's situated 650 metres downstream from the existing Abbey Bridge.
- Design & Structure: A state-of-the-art below-deck arch design will be utilised to provide stunning views while respecting the area's historic aesthetics. The main span will measure 86.5 metres, comprising three sections: a western approach of 24 metres, a central river span of 36 metres, and an eastern approach of 26.5 metres.
- Materials: The bridge will feature weathering steel, chosen for its durability and minimal maintenance needs, presenting a rust-like finish that blends seamlessly with the natural landscape.
- Dimensions: With a total width of 4.3 metres, the bridge will support a shared-use path of 3.5 metres for pedestrians and cyclists. It will also offer a minimum waterway width of 3.7 metres for vessels below.
- Safety Features: Equipped with pedestrian and cyclist-friendly parapets, the bridge's design ensures safety with handrails positioned at 1 metre and 1.4 metres high.
Environmental and Practical Benefits: The bridge's construction employs advanced materials that reduce long-term maintenance costs and offer environmental advantages. Its surface will feature a slip-resistant, waterproof epoxy grit, designed to manage drainage effectively and reduce flooding and ice risks.
Access and Connectivity:
- West Bank Connection: A ramped footway will link the bridge to the Severn Trent Water Access Road, 240 metres north of Pershore Road.
- East Bank Connection: Steps and a ramped causeway will connect to the bridge near the Evesham Leisure Centre.
- Public Rights of Way: Existing paths along the riverbanks will maintain a clear headroom of 2.4 metres, ensuring continued public access.
This project represents a significant step forward in Worcestershire's efforts to improve sustainable transport options and enhance the local infrastructure, making it easier and safer for pedestrians and cyclists to traverse the River Avon.
For those interested in viewing the detailed plans, they are available at the Department for Transport in Hastings and at the Worcestershire County Council offices in Worcester.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development, as Worcestershire continues to invest in its future with innovative and community-friendly projects.
