As of June 1, 2025, the Scottish Government has implemented new temporary traffic restrictions across the North East Scotland Trunk Roads, affecting several major routes, including the M90/A90/A9000. These changes are due to essential road works and are set to last until September 1, 2025.

Key Changes:

  1. Prohibition of Traffic and Overtaking: Certain sections of the trunk roads will be completely closed to traffic. These closures will be indicated by specific traffic signs. Additionally, overtaking on some roads will be prohibited to ensure safety during the road works.

  2. Speed Restrictions:

    • 50 mph Limit: Many stretches of the M90/A90/A9000 and associated roads, such as the A85 and A92, will have a reduced speed limit of 50 mph.
    • 30 mph Limit: In areas where convoy working is in place, a stricter speed limit of 30 mph will apply. This includes parts of the A95 and A96, among others.
  3. Exemptions: Emergency services vehicles, such as those for fire, ambulance, police, and coastguard purposes, are exempt from these restrictions. Vehicles involved in the road works are also exempt.

  4. Alternative Routes: The Scottish Ministers have considered alternative routes for affected traffic, ensuring minimal disruption wherever possible.

Affected Areas:

The restrictions primarily affect slip roads and carriageways from Perth to Fraserburgh, including key junctions and interchanges such as Broxden Roundabout, Kingswells, and Craibstone. Notable roads affected include:

  • M90/A90/A9000: Stretching from Edinburgh to Fraserburgh, various sections will see traffic prohibitions and speed reductions.
  • A96: From Craibstone to Inverness, significant portions will have a 30 mph speed limit.
  • A92 and A85: Key regional roads will experience speed limits of 50 mph in certain sections.

Why These Changes?

The restrictions are necessary to facilitate essential maintenance and upgrading works aimed at improving road safety and infrastructure. These measures are temporary but crucial for ensuring the long-term usability and safety of these roads.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, adhere to the new speed limits, and look out for traffic signs indicating road closures and diversions. By doing so, they can contribute to the smooth execution of these road improvements and ensure safety for all road users.
