New Temporary Speed Limit for A85 in Oban: What You Need to Know
Starting September 22, 2025, drivers on the A85 Trunk Road in Oban will need to ease off the accelerator as a new temporary speed restriction comes into play. This new regulation, enacted by the Scottish Ministers, introduces a 20mph speed limit on specific stretches of the road to enhance public safety and protect the road infrastructure.
Why the Change?
The decision to impose this temporary speed limit stems from concerns over potential dangers to the public and possible damage to the road, not related to construction work. The authorities have assessed alternative routes for affected traffic, ensuring minimal disruption.
Where Does the Limit Apply?
The 20mph restriction covers two specific sections of the A85:
- From 194 metres north of the junction with Park Hotel Lane to 55 metres southwest of the junction with Aird’s Crescent, stretching approximately 776 metres.
- From 69 metres north of the junction with Argyll Street to 20 metres north of the junction with Victoria Crescent, covering about 433 metres.
Exemptions to the Rule
Not every vehicle is subject to this new speed limit. Exemptions include:
- Vehicles related to special forces activities, as specified in the Road Traffic Exemptions (Special Forces) Regulations.
- Emergency vehicles used for coastguard operations.
Duration of the Order
This speed limit is temporary, effective from September 22, 2025, until March 22, 2027. During this time, compliance is mandatory whenever the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
Stay Informed
As these changes come into effect, drivers are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to the new speed limits to ensure safety for all road users. Keep an eye out for traffic signs indicating when and where these restrictions apply.
