Cornwall College Gains New Powers to Award Degrees: What You Need to Know
Exciting developments are on the horizon for Cornwall College, as a new order has been enacted to enhance its degree-awarding capabilities. The "Power to Award Degrees etc. (Cornwall College) Order 2025" has been officially made by the Office for Students, paving the way for significant educational advancements in the region.
Key Highlights:
-
Permanent Foundation Level Awards: Starting 16th May 2026, Cornwall College, also known as The Cornwall College Group, will have the indefinite authority to grant taught awards up to and including foundation level. This means students can look forward to a consistent offering of foundational courses designed to equip them with essential skills and knowledge.
-
Bachelor’s Level Awards for a Limited Time: In addition to foundation level awards, Cornwall College will also be able to grant bachelor's level taught awards. However, this power is temporary, effective from 16th May 2026 until 15th May 2030. This period allows the college to demonstrate its capabilities in delivering high-quality higher education at this level.
-
Delegation Powers: The order also permits Cornwall College to authorise other institutions to grant these awards on its behalf, expanding its educational reach and collaboration potential with other educational entities.
This development is a significant milestone for Cornwall College, reflecting the trust and confidence placed in its educational standards by the Office for Students. It opens doors for both prospective students and the college itself to engage in a broader array of academic programs.
Importantly, the order has been implemented without the need for an impact assessment, as it is deemed to have no adverse effects on businesses, civil society organisations, or the public sector.
For Cornwall College and its students, this order signifies an exciting new chapter, promising enriched educational opportunities and a strengthened academic community.
